Developmental trauma and an over sensitive survival response (fight/flight/freeze/friend/flop) stay with the child as they navigate big changes such as new environments, homes and caregivers but also smaller transitions between activities, leaving home or moving between classrooms. The child is in survival mode and is hypervigilant for such a lot of time that they aren’t able to access their higher level thinking where they would be able to learn, process, build relationships and begin to trust adults.
